Hello all, i am a new visitor to this forum (previous owner of a powerstroke SD crew...too much truck even for me!) anyway i just got a 01 f150 7700 with 116,000 miles. it runs great and has very minimal wear in and out. it use to be a fleet vehicle and now its my driveway. i have been researching updates and upgrades and found many for the 4r100 tranny. but haven't found any feedback from people who have done them. some of the mods include.....
accumulator valve, modified valve body, new pump gear, reverse boost, line pressure modulator, torque convertors, and other misc. mods. most of these i found on the website for sonnax. who makes most of the update kits for many many trannys. I have also read that it isn't a good idea to use a reprogrammer to change the tranny characteristics since it only raises line pressure and doesn't actually improve any of the stock defects or weaknesses. any input?
to get to the point... is it worth it to do anything and if so what have you done. i would like to firm up the shifts in my truck but not over do it. just have nice quick positive shifts. thanks in advance, dan
A programmer or tuner raises pressures and changes the shift points which is pretty much the same as a shift kit in an older transmission did.
Unless you're racing or towing lots I don't think you'd gain anything by modifying the transmission rather than using a tuner.
Another good feature of a tuner is that you can get some more power out of the engine with it. You can also use most tuners as scan tools too if your check engine light comes on.
Anyone else have any pros or cons about a tuner rather than other modifications?
It depends who does the tune. The superchips custom tuner is a great device, the other ones I wouldn't go with. The jerry mod for the 4r70w transmission is a worthwhile mod to firm up shifts.
