390 eo 400

I posted this before, but got the years mixed up. I jave a 1968 Ranger, pulled the 390 out, putting in a 1971 Mercury 400 out of a Monterey. I'm not sure if the exhaust will hook up to the 400 Manifolds. The truck has a split drive shaft were the car has a solid one piece driveshaft. The yoke that goes into the trans on the split dr/shaft looks bigger then the one from the car. I'm not even sure about the Motor mounts. I suppose I could take the ones off the 390 and put thhem on the 400? Any info would help.

Ajoe, what you are trying to do is possible, but you'll have to change a bunch of parts. The exhaust is differant, the bell patterns are differant, the motor mounts are differant. You'll need to use the power steering and alternator that came on the Merc. There is nothing wrong with a 400, but it might be easier to fix the 390. DF, over @ his Dad's house

Bell Patterns?

Do you mean bell patterns on the trans? I am useing the trans that came on the 400, so that won't be a problem. Although as you stated there are plenety other problems. Would the trans from the 400 bolt up to the 68 390?

Nope...The 400 is in a different family of engines (335) than the 390 (FE) engine. What you are planning will require you to use the trans from the 400. What trans is in the truck now? My guess is that the tail shaft of the tranny in the truck has a U-joint connection and not a slip yolk, but I could be wrong. The drive shaft from the car can be used, of course it will need to be lengthened to fit the longer span though.

Sorry --Mike
