I have a recently installed 351w with aod tranny. It has edelbrock carb/manifold. Love the swap from my 300, but it doesnt shift to 2nd until about 25-30mph. How can I adjust this to shift earlier? It has 2.75 gears, I am looking for 3.50 with posi. Will that help some?
FIX THIS PROBLEM IMEDIATLY!!!!!! If you don't do something about it quick, you WILL burn out the tranny! The adjustment is made throught either a kickdown rod, or cable. It should be attached to the throttle lever of the carb. I put a 351 with edlebrock carb in my truck with an AOD, and I burned the tranny up because it wasn't adjusted right. Lokar makes a kickdown cable which is supposed to work with an edlebrock carb and aod. Sorry I don't have any specific fix, I just wanted to warn you.
There is a cable adjustment for the tranny by the carb. But should I screw it in or out for earlier shifting? Screwed it in a little couldnt really tell the difference.
I did the same swap, but with a C6 instead of the AOD. On my '82 , the kickdown doesn't mean a thing unless you want the tranny to kick down a gear for passing. However, we had some trouble getting the right modulator and getting that adjusted properly. The 351W will give you enough kick that you want it shifting at different points than the 300. Check with a tranny expert and let him know where you got the AOD and the differences in engines and he should be able to recommend the correct modulator valve. It could be that your tranny has cooked second gear and you need some overhaul work. Research the tranny people and try to get someone that was recommended; I don't trust the big chains unless it is someone I know.
Oh, by the way, I just picked up my 3.50 posi last night. I'm hoping to get it in tonight and feel the difference from my 2.75 open. If you had the 300, check your tag on the axle. Mine was the less common 31 spline rear and I understand Ford used this heavier axle on a lot of the 300's back then.
LAST EDITED ON 29-Mar-01 AT 11:25 AM (EST)[p]Cantdrive55 is right. This cable will ruin your trans if not adjusted right. This trans does not have a modulator valve like a C6. The cable does the job the modulator valve used to do in the older transmissions.

A local ford tranny shop told me to turn the screw counterclockwise a couple of turns should help out. I have all the gears it just shifts at too high of rpm for my taste. Also, he said he could do a pressure test of some kind to really dial it in correctly. Also, the 2.75 is garbage with the aod. He reccommended 3.73 or better. I will try adjusting the cable and let you know how it worked. Give me a heads up on the difference with those new gears, that is my next install.
If the cable is not adjusted properly, and it does do permentent damage, you may still have all your gears. Mine shifted pretty simirally to your's, with all gears, but it was still toast. If you catch it quick enough, no harm should be done. Good luck!
Also, I have a 3.50 behing mine, and like it fine. Good power and decent mileage. If I ever get the tranny back in shape I'm gonna get a limited slip rear end in it.
I got my 3.50 posi in last night (upgrade from the 2.75 open) and what a difference on accleration. It feels weird, though. I guess it's OK, but going around corners is pretty jerky. I'll be towing the race car tomorrow and I'll let you know if there is an improvement.
Also along with the rod ajustment which is VERY important as stated,You could get a trans. no-go yo yo from trans-go....I did one on a 82 wagon that shifted like a DOG!!!!!You have to change springs inside remove ***** in valve body itself but man what a improvement.NO LIE. ......check it out only 20-30 bucks
