On the 4x2, the front shock is different than a 4x4. The 4x2 shock has a stud on top that passes through the top mount. The retaining nut fits on the stud, sandwiching the top shock mount between the upper and lower shock bushings. You must secure that stud to properly tighten the retaining nut. With the bilsteins you secure the stud by using an allen wrench on top. (The stud has a recess in the top of it.) The only real way of accessing the top of the stud is from under the hood. It's a really pain to hold the allen wrench and to tighten the retaining nut. If you don't hold the stud, it will just spin when you try to tighten up the retaining nut. I replaced my bilsteins when they wore out with KYB Monomax shocks. They have a nut welded to the base of the stud that is accessable from under the wheelwell. Very easy to secure the stud while you are tighting the retaining nut. FYI, I've had both the bisteins and now the KYB shocks. The KYB's are every bit as good a shock as the bilsteins in my opinion.
Same warranty, too.

FYI, some folks cut away a portion of the inner fender liner to easily access the top of the shock stud. I didn't want to do that to my inner fender.
Todd.

Hey I was wondering if I was due for new shocks? I have this knocking sound from above the drivers side wheeel. sounds like I left a wrench in there to knock on some plastic part. dose that sound like a shock probelm?? ball joints seem to be good. I pulled real hard on them a few weeks ago whrn Ihad the truck up. Thaks J

It could just be one of your shock mount bolts... i was getting the same sound and it turned out to be a loose bolt. hope this helps!!

Check all your bolts. See my post above with link to previous thread. Ended up costing money and headache. Was loose rear shock bolt.

I knew that mine were bad because I was (and still am until I get my new ones) getting a nock in the front, after extensive searching I found that the bushings are missing on the lower side of the front drivers side shock alowing about 1/4" of play.

Thanks Dawg & rob,
I did not think to check the rear since it realy sounds like it is comming from the driverside front,, that is a good though. to me it sounds like what I would think a worn bushing would sound like, but I would think that a loose bolt would do the same..
also nearly every bolt on my truck has been ratteled loose, its been in some rough country. I even had the rear cab mout bushings compleatly worn away!!! I ll poke around some more underneath the truck and see what I find. could it also be any thing to do with a sway bar?... thanks j

I just found out that I have this same problem on the passenger side.
Can this bushing be replaced or do I need a new shock?

I have never heard of anyone replacing just the bushings. I would have to say that if the bushings are gone than it would be safe to say that the whole shock is pretty well shot and due for replacement. I went ahead and ordered Bilsteins from www.shox.com , on Friday. They said that I should expect to get them in 5 days. I called around locally and checked all the on line leads and found them to be the best deal.
