I just need to install the intank fuel pump on my 87 f150 4.9. The sending unit works and Ford tested the in tank fuel pump it runs for a while then looses pressure real fast. The truck runs when I switch to the rear tank. Is it hard to just replace replace the in tank fuel pump and not the whole unit? Also how do i replace the fuel screen at the bottom of the sender unit.

well the pump is fairly easy to replace. it is held on via a foam shim of sorts. the fuel sock pulls right off, it is held on by compression. you should always replace the fuel sock when you are replacing a pump. i am not sure how they came to this conclusion on the pump though. most of the problems like you described come from the fuel selector valve. does it not do it on the rear tank? what type of problems did you have when you took it in to get diagnosed?
Thanks for the info. on replacing the fuel pump, sounds pretty easy. Are there to wires to connect? I just put in a new selector value because it was pumping fuel to the front tank. I replaced the frame mounted fuel pump to because i was running real loud. Also put in a new front fuel tank last fall. Ford tested the fuel pressure to the front tank and said it would not hold pressure but the rear tank held pressure. The rear tank is all rusted out so i can't use it anymore. I can drive on the front tank for about 15 minutes then it starts to stall. I then switch to the rear tank to keep going without any problems.
