I use to be a welder in the Coast Gaurd (14 years ago) I would like to buy a welder. I used a Miller AC/DC Arc welder. Because of the A/C current was able to run a Tig set-up. Reverse Polarity. They are asking apretty pennie for a current set-up stick/tig. Why can't I just buy a AC/DC arc welder and add the Tig outfit at a later date?. I am thinking of a 225 or 250 Amp outfit for my Buisness. Suggestions or comments?
Thanks Al
Al, after being around the world with the Coast Guards you should know that you get what you pay for. A rube goldberg appapparatus is what you will have. If you want a tig welder get the best you can afford, and use it as it's intended.

I've had kinda the same thoughts for a while now. I have an AC stick welder but would like to get into a MIG/TIG so I could tackle some light work. I agree completely with Sgt. Get the best you can afford. Right now with one kid in college, another hopefully following --- I'm sure you get the idea. Does anyone know how to upgrade present equipment and would it be worth it?
MODs please feel free to move to garage/workshop if appropriate.
J.C wittney has a stitch welding attachment for I think 60.00 that attaches to your stick, arc or whatever you want to call it and reduces the amperage so you can weld sheet metal. I was going to buy it because Arc was all I knew but I had sold my Arc welder years ago. I needed something for the floors, cab corners, etc in my truck. I ended up with a Lincoln mig welder because I thought it would cover everything I would need it for. Good luck
