I have a 1991 ford ranger. Neither the stero or the speakers are stock. The left rear speaker makes a crackling noise at certain frequencies and it happens sporadicly or all the time. I have checked the connections at the speaker and the connections at the head unit. Is it possible that the head unit is bad or is there a wire touching metal somewhere?
one thing to check is to see if all the wires are tight, if they are wiggiling then that can cause a crackel, check the speakers first and then if its not too much of a pain check the wires at the HU. Make sure to check the connectors on the HU. Another thing could be the wires are busted, but thats kinda unlikely. It could also be the speaker itself. Try lightly pushing in on the cone and see if it is a smooth feeling. If it feels scratchy, or catches it might just be the speaker. What type of speakers are they and how old?
it is not the speaker i switched the two back ones and the same thing happened in the left rear spot with the right rear speaker. I have checked all the connections. The only thing i have not done is check the wires in between the speaker and the head unit. I was just wondering if it is possible for the head unit to crackle at certain frequencies for a specific speaker......
i dont thing it would be for specific speakers, but the HU's amp may have some internal glitch, its hard to tell most times if a HU was having problems the whole frequency band or either the top or bottom would die, but i havent heard of it on a certain frequency. Im sure that its possible but not that common in my experience. If you can try to hook the HU up to other speakers or try to put another HU in to see if its the wires. If its happening in all the speakers then its probably a HU problem.
It is only happening in the rear left speaker and i am positive it is not the speaker. I will try to hook up my friend's hu to my truck it is a pretty similar model.
before you goto all the trouble.. check your connections closely. and also if its on just one side check to see if they are touching some of the metal frame .. also check the speaker to see if its not moving around.. this is trouble I know. but it will lead to MORE if you leave it .
the speaker does not move at all, the connections are fine. I recut them and made sure they were not exposed at all. I have yet to check the wire underneath the carpet i guess that is where it goes.
No, unless one was built that I don't know about. It started happening about a month ago and I also forgot to say that it sounds normal under 1/3 volume but past that you can hear the ridiculously loud cracks.
Have you tried just taking a wire and connecting a speaker at the HU? See if it crackles then? That would tell you if it was wiring or internal amp on HU, if you tested your friends HU that would probably determine it too.
u could have a couple of strands of the wire broken somewhere under the carpet makeing an arc cousing the noise.. my first guess would b grounds if they arent on bare metal and conected tightly. could also be the amp in the h/u i would disconect the speaker pull out the h/u and wire it with a shorter piece of wire (not running the wire or mounting the speaker) to make sure it isnt the wireing. then try different speaker if it still makes the cracking. then u will know wether its the h/u
