Tranny Cooler

My 92 Aerostar has two tranny coolers, one in the rad and an air cooled one behind the bumper.
My local tranny shop suggested another cooler would be a good idea since heat seems to be the greatest enemy of these trannys.
My question is, can I use an additional air cooled unit off of a doner vehicle along with the coolers already on the van?
This would mean two factory air coolers and the rad cooler all together.
Anybody done this?
Could it possibly run too cool in the winter with the extra cooler?

Yes.

You have to think about your climate, and hill climbing activities.

FWIW adding a extra cooler in parallel with the existing cooler, with a shut off valve for the winter would not be a bad idea.

The tank in the rad is not a cooler, it is a heater. Where I live, starting up with the transmission oil at -44c in the morning, the heater tank comes into play.

-44 Degrees C? Good Heavens! Where do you live? Siberia?

Anyway, there are tranny coolers that are temperature regulated, i.e. they open up only when the fluid gets too hot. Personally, I just put in the regular cooler from Hayden, right after the cooler in the radiator. The stock cooler in the bumper is real junk, I swapped the lines to make it my Power Steering cooler instead.

Winnipeg.

It's cold enough to kill even a THM350 after about 15 years.

Don't worry about being too cold. It's the heat that kills a trannie. The one that goes to the rad is not a heater. It's is a flow through cooler. But when the temp is 20c. It sucks. My 94 Aero has the rad and the bumper one. As well is the stock one behind the grille power steering cooler. I have towed many a trailer, with no problems. Power Cool sells a 24" long one I may pickup, since the veh is getting older. And also turn the org one into a larger steering cooler.
Adding one more would not hurt.

That's what I thought. But then BarryFS also has a good point. I don't know the properties of Mercon at -44C, so I can't tell, but if the oil turns into molasses it can't be good for the tranny.
