Hmmmmm....I would say, a 4 bbl. carb and Headers.....after that, maybe going to an electronic ignition....don't know if that will add more "pep" but it will make maintenace easier. I have also seen dual 4 bbl manifolds.....that should give you pep and a deep hole in your finances.
Thought about elec ign right away. What is the preference on manifold and 4 bbl carb? Best header? How can you keep them tight, friends told me they will just keep coming loose. Nice old truck, no rust, thought I'd do the body next year. Father in law gave it to us before he passed away last year. He bought it new, 90,000 mi and 10,000 on new eng. Thanks for the advice
I've got some hedman elites that havent leaked since I bought them, but I did need to cut the flange inbetween each of the exaust ports, so that they would'nt leak,or a machine shop will get them straight for around $30-40 a manifold
With headers....make sure you wrap your starter with a heat sheild...they will fry it otherwise. I have also seen that JEG's carries a couple of Header kits that can custom welded to fit best....
One other thing I have heard....not sure on this one.....is that aftermaket headers may bolt on to the heads differently...weather this is new bolt locations or simple tapping the holes to make them larger, I don't know....I would like clarification if this sounds familiar to anyone.

If you order up a set of truck headers, they will be the standard top/bottom bolt pattern. The Mustang/Cougar and a few other FE passenger cars used the GT heads which bolted up differently (14 holes to pick from).
72, 390. Not fixing it up for the strip but what would be the first things to do to give it a little more pep. Thanks
Changing the rear end ratio is the simplist way to get more pep. You can expect to burn more gas though. Pep cost money, and with gas going over $2.00 per gallon.....
This will save u alittle gas & give u MorePower. If you have a good clean
cooling system go with a Electric cooling fan setup. Basically the fan is only needed in city driving..my 2cents

What I did to mine was to add electronic ignition, 8mm wires, gap plugs so .040 fits but .045 does not, set timing about 12 degrees and put the lightest springs on the mechanical advance. I also just put on a new Edelbrock 1406 600 CFM carb yesterday, (already had a Carter AFB 4bbl on it but it needed rebuilding).
What a difference, very responsive now. I have the 4 speed with granny low and unless it's in 4th, the slightest movement of the gas peddle can be felt instantly. Almost too responsive when in 2nd and going over rough terrain, hard to keep the foot steady.
Mileage has actually increased to about 14, about 1-2 better than before. And this is with a 428 rebuilt to use regular fuel, ie lower compression than a stock CJ. A bit less HP, but what a torque monster, just what one needs in a truck.
If the truck is a keeper spend some money and get your new headers coated inside and out with a ceramic coating like HPC. This will keep the heat in the pipe and away from the engine compartment and starter. You will gain a few % in performance with the coating as will as extend the header life from rust out.
I went from 10 MPG to 14 MPG by simply "bolting on" the Edelbrock 1406 to my 390. Still using the old distributor....I have replaced the plugwires and have installed new NGK plugs. I bought my new carb from a local auto parts chain for about $300.
