cold air induction

Has anyone ever herd of using the freon out of your ac to cool a box that cools the air before it gets sucked into the intake.

Awhile back I sat down and tried to design such a box.

While good in theroy, I quickly found out that it would work, but what ever gains that may be realized were soon lost when I figured in the power loss that would be generated by the AC compressor.

On a side note...

Yesterday when I was fooling around with my Predator live data readings, I was very shocked to see the IAT temp value from my stock intake when I was idling in a parking lot.

It was ~33 F out side, and my IAT temp was the better part of 73 F from the box that should be pulling cold air from the front of the truck, not the motor compartment!!!

I'm definately going to correct this! I'll prolly try doing a modified zoodad mod.

I bet you would see the IAT would be way less if you were traveling down the road and the temps outside that cold. The air intake from a vehicle sitting still is never going to be like you would like it as you will be pulling air close off the surface of the vehicle and get skin affect on the air temps from the surface of the vehicle, even if you pull the air from outside the vehicle.

Now once in motion, that all starts to change. Its really cool that you can read your IAT like that, would be neat to get to fool around with that some and keep a log of what temps you see when its what temp outside and at a set speed each time. I have worked extensively with outboard motors and the temps we see under the hood while they are screaming and sucking up all the air they can pull.

Most of the OB motors get run hard and for sure the ones on bassboats. What I see on them at WOT is really shocking till you start to put things in perspective. You would think at WOT and how we sing these fuel burners that they would get way hot at WOT. Not the case, actually the temps under the hood for air intake actually goes way down. Sure our PSD's are not screaming like a high strung 2 stroke OB, but still the PSD consumes lots of air and even at 2000 RPM's, you was to place the vehicle in motion with the least amount of ducting of the intake air would have an affect on the IAT's.

My PSD doesn't have the intercooler as the newer ones do, but the air intake system was so restrictive from the factory system I still made a big benefit when I modified the intake and now pull the air from under the hood from within the engine compartment. Now grant you in motion down the road I still have quite a bit of air from the mods I did to the grill and the driverside inner fender to get fresh air around the big filter, but its not like a cowl induction from a good hood or grill setup.

Its still better to have all the air the PSD can pull on than to have the coolest of air but restrictive and not allowing all the air the PSD wants making the motor suck for all the air she can get LOL...

Heck yes he's done it, look in his gallery. I've been wanting to asking him for some dimensions or even offer some cash and shipping to make me one! By the way Rowdyone, I've shown you're set up to othersand everybody likes it. Diesel and gasser guys.

Well, I am flattered guys. I went to a truck shop and bought me the long radius slip on chromed tip in a 4". Then took my chop saw and cut off the upset end that is used to slip on the 4" pipe. Then went to deco rubber company and bought me a piece of hose and clamps. Then the filter, which there is many different brands of the same style and size of this filter that works perfect. Our NAPA store here didn't have much of anything LOL...

Then I went and sawed out the back side of the grill of the truck to let more of the air into the area as well as sawed a couple 2" holes in the inner fender by the filter also to help get more of the fresh air to the filter area. Sure made a big difference on my PSD's performance and fuel mileage as well. Really lets the straight 4" exhaust and the turbo sing well together now LOL. Thanks again for the gracious comments on The GWE too.
