head gasket

Well i had my 1992 explorer in at ford and they said i have a blown headgasket. I was wondering what your opinions are on getting a new engine put in or buy another car or truck. I only have around 4000 to spend.

Here's how I see it. You can spend $4000+the value of the Explorer (wouldn't expect that to be very high with a blown headgasket) on a used vehicle. Assuming you would be replacing with a similar type vehicle (mid-size SUV), you'd probably get something ~mid '90's (maybe late '90's is you're good at car shopping) with 100-150K miles (or so, again, it depends on how good you are at car shopping) with an unknown history and who knows what potential problems lurk under its hood. Or you can take a good chunk of that cash (I spent ~$4000 on my engine rebuild but it also included a water pump, AC work, and such while everything was out) and get an essentially new engine and you know the history of the rest of the drivetrain (how many miles does the transmission have on it?). A lot depends on what you want to drive (do you want the Explorer, or do you wish you had something bigger/smaller/different), but, all things being equal, I think it can be a better choice to take chances on the existing vehicle with a known history than to take chances on a different vehicle with an unknown history.

I used the 1992 explorer as my daily driver. I think that it is only worth around $2000. I know that a good engine rebuild is around 3-4 thousand or is that not correct? I can also get a used engine for around $2500 with 60000 miles. I cant complain too much because the motor had 220000 miles.

I did some extensive checking on engines for my 91 and found that the majority of long block rebuilts come in around $1650. Installation ranges around 6-700.
Oddly enough, the highest longblock price I found was from Ford (2400), but the installation was only around 500.

I got a package price of 2100 from a local machine shop (engine + labor). It should be ready for pick up tomorrow or Saturday.

I decided to trade in my 1992 explorer for a 1998 with the v8. It seems like it will be nice.
