overdrive, or not?

I was reading in the forum on the Escapes, and saw someone said when driving below speeds of 45, turn off the overdrive to save the torque converter. Should we turn off OD in our Explorers with the 5 speed automatic? If so, at what speed?

I never turn off the OD on my Explorer. Never had any problems. My dad has a 1995 Bronco and he always leaves the OD on as well.

I agree, no need to turn OD off. One exception is if you are driving in the snow.... however, you probably won't be going fast enough for it to kick in anyway...

Only other time I turn it off is if I'm going down a steep winding grade. I use the transmission to downshift and slow the car, and turning off the OD prevents accidentally slamming down 2 gears. I do the same thing in my '96 350.

I find that using OD in normal traffic, or city driving is what it was designed for. It provides a gear that will let the engine run at a lower rpm. I use mine when comming down steep grades ( acting like a brake ) and going up hill's so not to slow like a semi truck.
