I'm afraid my tranny is shot. Any suggestions on what to do? As I see it, I have a few options:
1. Take it AAMCO or some other chain store, have them rebuild it, and get a decent warranty (12 mo, 24 mo, maybe even 36 mo).
2. Take it to some small tranny repair shop and have it rebuilt, and get maybe a questionable warranty depending on how reputable the shop is.
3. Find a wrecked explorer at a junkyard or somewhere else, have the used tranny pulled, and find someone who will put it on.
I've heard that if you take it to AAMCO or somewhere else like that, they could either rebuild the tranny or they may replace it with another rebuilt tranny. Not sure which is best, but I guess if you get a warranty it doesn't matter. I don't want to dump much $$$ into this thing. It has 120k miles and is in so-so shape.
Guys, I'm facing some of the same questions with the wife's 94 with an auto tranny. It is leaking from the front seal I think and shifts between 2nd and 3rd are getting harsh. Especially when it down shifts from 3rd to 2nd. Any suggestions and what is the cheaper way to go for some level of reliability without spending an arm and a leg. Maybe tranny trouble goes with being a husker fan.
If you have not had it confirmed that your tranny is trashed, take it to two or three shops and get opinions. I may not be anything too serious. If they tell you it needs work, you may be able to save some money by doing the remove and install yourself.
Thanks for the feedback. It is still working, but showing signs of weakness. I may try a flush and new fluid, but that won't cure the leaking seal. Probably the best option is to just get it fixed.
Have the exact same probelm. I'm buying a used tranny for 250$ (they gwill give me a 30 day waranty) and having a neighborhood garage put it in for 300$. And then I'm selling it for 1300$
I would price the rebuild at your Ford dealership. The one here was very competitive with Aamco. It has a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty.
I also had them put an external tranny oil cooler on so it doesn't overheat again.
