MSD problems

I think after reading a few posts I think I have found the problem but I'll run it past you guys anyway. My magnetic pickup went bad and I replaced it. It was a royal pain to replace. At idle now the motor runs smooth but when you get on it it starts to misfire. It didn't do this before. I did notice that there was a little slop in the shaft. I wondering if there is supposed to be any slop? Also there is some corrosion on the fins of the distributor, not bad though. I'm thinking when I replaced the pin in the shaft that I might have banged it a little to hard, and possibly did a number on the bearings. When the vacuum advance is hooked up it backfires bad when you get on the gas. The base timing is at 18BTDC. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

There should be no wobble. If it wobbles away from the pickup, you lose the signal to fire the MSD box. A missfire means you have pumped an unburned air/fuel mixture into the hot exhaust, where it can suddenly burn and cause a backfire.

I just replace the whole distributor on my 460. It's easier and is only about $29.00 as a rebuilt.

I thought about going back to a stock one but I have a 331 that makes some serious power. I already bought another MSD unit and if it goes bad on me again I'll just start using an HEi from a late seventies model. Thanks

I had the exact same problem, double check your spark plug wires, I had reversed a couple of wires, messed up the firing order.
