Hey guys i know some of you will get a kick out of this. myself and a few guys at my school are on what called the "super mileage team" where, from scratch, you build a car. The goal is to seat one person and get the absolute best mileage possible. This is a national compettition so everyone has to use the same briggs 3.5 HP motor.... no mods to the engine whatsoever are aloud. Last year we raised a little over 4k and built are car with that.... custom making our body out of fiberglass...... now with that car LAST year we finished first.... on our best run, averaging 15 MPH we got 2,500 MPG yes that is not a typo 2500 MPG. This year we spend 11k on just the body alone, (pure carbon fiber) and have projections to be getting at least 3300 MPG...... engineering colleges are only getting about 800 MPG in this competition. I say that if high school students can push a one person car with a LAWN MOWER MOTOR to get 2500 MPG the automotive industry could be doing a little bit better on fuel comsumption.
Just thought id share with ya guys wat we're doing in school i thought it was pretty cool
If you could make it street legal and cough up 90% of your mpg as a result, you could get rich selling the plans on E-Bay. 200 - 300 mpg and street legal - think about it.
It's really not that difficult. A properly tuned 5hp briggs on a small bike gets in the neighbor hood of 100 miles to the gallon. Our mini bike held about 1/2 gallon, it wasn't uncommon to run the thing for 8 to 10 hours on less than half that amount of fuel. Most of the running was at WOT (5000rpm).
man..i wish our school had a team like that..i would definately love to do something like that...might try to have a go at something like that myself..just for the heck of it..might learn something from it..
Hey guys, those of you who wish you had this program... last year was our first year... we started it at our school..... as far as funding, our school hardly gives us a penny, we call around to local business and large corporations for donations... oh yeah, this really isn't even affiliated with a shop class, we get together almost everyday after school, and each weekend. All you need is a teacher that will say that they will be your "sponsor" (our is the wood-shop teacher) If you really want some more information i could get it for you guys
try to get me some more information please..maybe an official website for the competition?...because we have a Robotics Team...its a county-wide thing...like..all the students from every school in the county that want to be on it are on one team...but it's still a really small team...i guess not much interest....but if i have some more info about it,i might be able to talk my school,or maybe vocational school into something like this...and thanks in advance..
-forgot to mention...NASA sponsors our Robotics Team...so hopefully we could find a great sponsor like that if we would happen to get the Super Mileage Team..
well i go into to work on it tomorrow, (im on spring break this week woooo hooooo) ill come up with some stuff tomorrow or the next day. comps are in less than a month and we have two cars to build with six guys...... burnin the midnight oil
