With the MSD, I guess you have to buy a dizzy, ignition module, coil, and ??? I'm looking for some ideas. Welldiver, were you happy with the MSD, how much of a difference did it make?
MSD billet Dizzy- around $230?
MSS 6 AL- around $180?
MSD blaster coil- around $30
Had MSD 8.5mm wires, now running some Taylors-can't recall the prices
I've had ond MSD 6AL fail, 2 magnetic pickups and one coil....not impressed.
If I had it to do over, I'd run the Performance Distributir DUI setup. Less money, and a lot less clutter under the hood.
After I put the MSD on I din't feel much of a differance at all, but I think it does help out above 3000 rpm's. My engine is mostly stock, it might make a larger differance with a higher copression ratio engine.
What are you going to be putting it on? How much of the ignition system do you already have?
I'm just looking to improve my performance a little. I have the Pertronix Ignitor and an Accel Supercoil which is nice. You guys have practically talked me out of the MSD, though. Now I'm looking at the Jacobs Ignition or DUI. Some say a stock dizzy with a ignition control module will work wonders.
I think the performance benefits are small, going to the full MSD system. Unless you are running an all out race motor, the stock dizzy/pertronics is probbaly a good setup. Run a good coil and wires and get the timing set correctly.
I didn't know any better when I bought my MSD. It does offer simple adjustability, and does not use vacuum.
Hhmmm. I guess some things just can't be improved on. Stock dizzy, supercoil, electronic ignition, 8.5mm wires. I guess my set up is good enough. Thanks.
I am running a stock dizzy with a Crane Cams advace kit in it, with the MSD 6A ign box and blaster 2 potted coil, and the power spike protecor. lots more efficient than the stock unit. also remeber to open your plug gaps up to 45 or 50 even 55 thou. you will see a much better fuel burn. the MSD and other brands are Multi Spark Discharge units. they burn the air fuel mix a lot better than just one little spark. I don,t know about the MSD 6AL units, they have a rev limit capabilaty. I don't run my truck on a drag strip. so I just run the 6A box. it is a direct replacement for the stock box or points. one last thing. if you runn a MSD or any other brand of upgrade IGN box. make sure you up grade the power wire feeds to 10 Ga. it is in the directions on all MSD equipment and on there web site to use 10 Ga feed wires from the batt to the box. your old hot wire is just a signal wire once you install the system. on the units that failed. where did you guys mount your box? behind the engine on the fire wall is not a real good place. to much heat. try to place your IGN box where it will be the coolest and use the vibration mouts. so far, mine is doing great.
I plan on getting the DUI dizzy when i do my build.
Too bad everywhere i go they try to sell me msd. Buy the time you get everything your looking at a pretty hefty bill. Im not interested at all in the msd in the slightest. Too much hype for what i hear of them failing all the time.
Sorry, i have no info on the msd itself.
And if I dont get the DUI for soem reason, Id probably go with Jacobs or maybe Mallory.
Too much hype for what i hear of them failing all the time.
I have run MSD on almost every V8 that I have owned over the years, and have NEVER had one fail. On my last ford P/U, I had the original MSD box for over 10 years, with out a single hickup
I personally think it is just as,if not more, reliable than the Duraspark setup.
However, others results may vary....
