Idle issue
My '91 4wd 5-speed Ranger has a transplanted '89 2.3. Recently I did a head gasket job, and replaced the water pump, rad, timing belt, and TPS. Lately when I come to a stop the idle is up (1000+ rpm). A quick tap of the throttle and it slowly comes down. Any ideas? I don't think checking codes will matter much, the Check Engine light has been coming on every day since I got it (over a year, in fact, in kind runs rough until it does come on, go figure.)

It could possibly be the iac vavle. Idle air control valve. It's located on the mass air meter. I would remove it and clean it out real good with some throttle body cleaner. They tend to carbon up after awhile and the plunger inside can't move all the way.

If you have a CEL pull the codes, it may not be related to your problem but it indicates something is wrong. I have the procedure in the tech info thread at the top of this forum, pulling eec-iv codes.
