Wide tires (floatation), and lots of hp. If you do go with that tire you should consider a regear, or a big power upgrade, or better yet, both. The lighter the vehicle the better, but don't sacfrice strenght for weight unless the smaller/lightercomponents are beefied up, for dune runniing a TTB works better for the high speeds bumps and dips, and the best lift is the type that autofab sells. In my mind the ideal vehicle would be a ranger extended cab, with a 302/C6/205t-case, then a dana 44 TTB (cut and turned beams) and a 9" combo with 4.10s and ls front and rear if you can't afford lockers, then set the suspension up to have the most travel possible you can afford (quite easy if you are a good welder), then i would keep the tire size between a 33-35, but go as wide as i can.
Well mustang that combo will not work if you were to use the ranger frame as the np205 will not fit between the frame rails on the ranger frame frankly for dune running I would stay with the np207 that comes in the rangers with a C4 behind the 302 this will actually drop a couple hundred pounds off the vehicle also, or you can switch the body onto an F150 frame, then you could use the c6/np205, but if you do use the TTB I personally don't like the 205 transfercases with them yes I know it's been done but it puts the front drive shaft at a side angle as well as the drop, plus only has the 1.97:1 low range wereas the bw, adn 208 transfer cases have a much lower low range, and weigh considerably less
get the absolute widest tires you can and then get the biggest big block you can and slap a blower on it. you are looking for the most horsepower with the mosr contact patch on the ground. paddle tires always works very well but they ride rough on the street, lol. one other thing... lose every bit of extra weight on your truck as possible. if you like to carry spare blocks and add a leafs and coil springs leave them at home before getting out there. the lighter you are the easier the tires will have trying to keep you above the sand
i beg to differ, the 205 fits great in a ranger....i personally know of two with 5.0's and 435's, and 1 tons around here that get wheeled quite hard

Yeah i have to agree about the C4 rob, but i would still stick with the gear case, as dune running shouldn't need that low of a low range, and i would give up the difference in lowrange if i were to build something like that, but i know what you mean about the side angle in the driveshaft (as thats the combo i have, 205 and the TTB), but its not that bad of an angle. But the question is, can you bolt a 205 up to a c4, or is a divorced unit needed?
Light weight, lots of motor, and a low center of gravity work well since you really don't need the height in the sand. Good breakover angle is nice to have since you do have to crest dunes...so something with moderate wheelbase would be cool. Big Bronco...Ranger...something along those lines.
I rode in and drove a '73 Bronco...glass tub...lightened to around 3200lbs with a 408w, dual spools, and paddles. Ran it up at Silver Lake sand dunes...absolutely awesome...made a joke out of any of the dunes and was awesome at the "flats" where drag races are held.
