I was under my truck today and noticed that there is a connecter with a couple wires comming out of the top of the diffential. The wires run toward the front of the truck along the frame rail. I was just wondering exactly what this does. Is it a sensor of some sort? This is probably a stupid question but im just curious as to what it is. My truck is a '95 f-150 4x4 v8 auto. I think it is an open diff too. Any thoughts on what this might be would be appriciated.
thanks,
jordan
Most likely this is the rear end speed senser. It is used to indicate your speed and also sends signals to the ABS brakes.
As you probably already know, it is about the size of a walnut and at least for the early to mid 90s, it is the only thing with wires on it, on the differential.
If it starts to go out, your speedo will start to fluctuate and may sometimes read 0 or may suddenly jump high. Eventually it will cause your cruise control to quit and will set a ABS light.
It costs something like $15 and takes maybe 2 minutes to replace, the dealer will charge upwards of $60.
