Hi All, I have a full size Bronco with a 5.0 F.I. and a AOD trans (confirmed). My problem is, yesterday I left home and 1st and 2nd was fine. Then when it went to shift into 3rd there was nothing there, it was as if it was shifted into neutral. I let off the gas no difference. I gave it more gas and it downshifted into 2nd. I came to a stop and tried again. Same results. I also noticed a whine it goes up with rpms. And is present while moving or even in park. Reverse is also fine. I did a stall test and it was about 2100. Which is where my manual says it should be. If anyone can help with any info I would greatly apriciate it. Thank you.

Looking through my ASTG manual on the AOD, I see that the only things different between 2nd and 3rd gear on the apply chart are the Intermediate One-way clutch releases and the Direct Clutch applies. I actually replaced a 4L60E in a 96 Tahoe today that had the same symptoms...direct clutch piston seal finally gave up the ghost.
What I'm thinking is that you've got either an internal fluid leak (o-ring) that's not allowing pressure to the direct clutch or valve body problem (plugged passage) that's not directing fluid to the clutch.
Thanks Cody, I pulled the trans out and apart. and, you were correct. The direct clutch pack was fried. I just got home with the new stuff. Im soaking the new clutches now. and will be putting it all back together in the morn. After a good search/cleaning of everything. Id like to find out where the blockage was that made the dcp fry. thank you very much again for your promp aid info.
