Hey guys is there an easy way to tell which is which while motor is in the car in a junkyard?? Wont be easy to crawl around or under to look for casting marks. Anyone got suggestion??
Thanks Dan
Very easy, the 390 and 400,and possibly more, have the intake that is half of the head.Just look at the intake where it meets the head.360 and 352 have a complete head,if that makes sense, just look and you can see the difference.
Stroked Cobra: I must take exception to your assertions.
You are correct that the 390 is "half" a head, in that the intake manifold forms part of the valve train cavity. The valve cover, in other words, overlaps both the intake and the head itself. However, all FE engines have this characteristic, including the 360 and 352, not just the 390. The FE family is the 330, 352, 360 390, 406, 410, 427 and 428 engines (and the related FT engines, 361 and 391).
This does not include the 400, sometimes called the 400M, which is a bigger version of the 351M for Modified.
Perhaps you were thinking of a different engine than the 400?

Have to agree with banjopicker66 here. 360 and 390 have interchangable heads, intake, and most other parts. Casting #'s won't even tell you for sure.
On a side note, a lot of 360's turn into 390's when someone is trying to sell one so make sure your check the stroke if it is a 390 you want. Don't rely on the VIN as many of these trucks had transplants.
Hawg Dawg has uncovered one of Ford's greatest mysteries! They say there are unknown forces moving about in the vicinity of FE motors. These forces know not the effect of the work that they do, nor can they explain how they do it, it is so dark and fearful a thing.
You see, the night before sale day, these evil ones, some impish, some brutish, all descend upon their intended victim - the FE doomed for sale! Using powers utterly unknown to mankind, these ghouls of the garage perform a mighty transmogrification! YES! IT WORKS! And the lowly 352 and the shortchanged but stout little 360 are transmogrified into the MIGHTY 390!
Of course their powers have only the 30-30 guarantee: 30 feet or 30 seconds, whichever comes first! Unfortunately, once you get it home your MIGHTY SUPER HERO 390 deflates to an underdog. ppptthhpphptphpptphpthphtpthh. ppth.

Dude, write a book. That's the truth if I ever heard it.
Then why does my 360 67 Ford NOT HAVE HALF A HEAD as you say all do,and M at the end of 351 does not stand for Modified, its there to seperate from windsor and cleveland.

Wrong both times. First, if it is a 360 it has to have the manifold extending under the valve cover or it's not a 360. Second, the Windsors and Clevelands are two seperate engine families and not related at all except by being the same CID. Windsors are all based on the 221,260,289,302and 351W. The Clevelands are called the 385 family and the M(Modified) is a raised deck height 351 so it will support a longer stroke to get 400CID.
