Hey, bjoern: Have you noticed any problems with the Bosch +4's? The manufacturers and others claim that the platinum plug is not recomended for such systems. Any input on your experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
LAST EDITED ON 18-May-01 AT 02:04 PM (EST)[p]I've heard about those problems and wonder why I don't notice anything. I've put the plugs in before I did the other mods. I usually don't drive the truck longer than about 30 minutes and I don't haul any heavy loads. They work just fine for me (since about 1 or 2k miles).
I've run platinum plugs with my MSD ignition and I'm not real pleased with their performance. I get an ignition miss under heavy load (towing) from stop once the engine is warm. I'm not sure if it is a plug wire or the plug itself, but I intend on changing both as soon as I get the chance. From what I read, the platinum plugs are built to retain heat as an intrinsic part of their design. The hotter spark of the MSD or Jacobs tends to melt the plugs down quicker than a normal plug.
Slik: Thanks for the input. It looks like bjoern's light driving explains why he hasn't had any problems. I've got my MSD parts in hand and can't wait to get 'em installed. The guy at my local parts store sold me a set of "Rapidfire" plugs--ACDelco. These are non-platinum plugs that he claimed were better. Did I make a mistake? They didn't have the NGK's, but I could take them back and exchange for Motorcraft. Also, you mentioned an extra .005 on the gap. I presume you have found this to be optimal for your rig. I also have the 351w and leave a camper (about 1500lbs) constantly on the truck. I have stock exhaust now but will soon have a performance system.
By the way, I got my MSD6a for $131.00 at Summit Racing--the best price I could find. Truck Performance.com had it for $50 more!
Guide me through how to get that price. This is all I could find at Carparts.com

Alright, my final post to this thread. It seems my gasmileage increase has leveled off at/around 17/17.5 mpg mixed driving with A/C. That is a increase of about 2mpg from 15.5mpg without A/C. If you account 1mpg for the A/C the MSD 6a upgrade has given me 3mpg gasmileage increase.
