It's the hub and bearing unit, where the speed sensor is attached to. It should all just slide off. Think I need a gear puller. Had a cheap one and bent the ends out on it trying to pull it off. I got the steering knuckle off with it all still attached by unbolting the 4x4 axle from the case. I'd still like to know why the hub won't come off. Think I need a bigger and better gear puller and I could get it.
The hub where the wheel bolts onto doesn't come apart. All you can do with it is replace it.
There are 3 bolts that hold the assembly to the steering knuckle and the 36mm nut on the end of the axle. Once you remove the axle nut you push the axle in for room to access the 3 bolts on the back.
Correct, but I don't need to replace the hub (I hope). I've got the 3 bolts out from behind the steering knuckle, but the hub won't slide off the axle.
You need to push in on the axle to get it out of the splines. I use a big brass punch and good sized hammer. Once you have the axle out then the wheel bearing/hub assembly comes out of the knuckle.
What part are you replacing that you're taking it apart?
well, I'm replacing the lower ball joint, but by unbolting the 4x4 axle on the far end, I was able to get the steering knuckle off. The hub came with it. Now, I just want to service the hub while I'm at it, seeing as how there's something not exactly right with it.
