I was installing some new brakes recently on my 83' Ford F100 with manual brakes and ran into the strangest problem. I can't seem to get the caliper to slide over the rotor. I have new everything: rotors, pads, calipers, etc, and it still won't go on. I believe I have the piston fully retracted into the bore of the brake cylinder (the piston will not go any farther even with the use of excessive strength). Has anybody else ever had this problem? By the way, I am using Car Quest pad and rotors.
first if you didnt do ,you have to bang the to sliding pins out.then if you are replacing the calipers hammer them up &bottom until they come out.i had the same problem .but i just kept banging the rotors until they came out.
What did you use to collapse the caliper piston(need a caliper piston collapse tool or a large c-clamp)? Are you sure the shoe that attaches to the caliper is onall the way? How about the shoe that goes behind the rotor, is it in the slots correctly and fully against the rotor?
It seems like you are having problems getting them on right? Did you pop the top off of the master cylinder before attempting to push the cylinder in? If not, try that.
I used a large c-clamp to push the piston into the bore. I screwed it to the point that it wouldn't budge an inch. I had the same problem with the old caliper, which had prompted me to buy this new one and boy it did me a lot of good! The dang thing still won't slide over the rotor with the pads fully seated, even with the piston forced in as far as it goes. The only thing I can think of is that either the rotors or the pads I bought are too thick, but I find that strange coming from a place like carquest. What is also strange is that it's only causing trouble on the passenger side. The driver's side slides over decently and the problem remained the same when I switched the pads from one side to another.

I have drained all of the fluid from the master cylinder and had removed the caliper, which must mean that all of the preasure's gone out of the system. I also tried pushing the piston in with it completely disconnected and it still seems to have reached its limit. This is the same way on the new and old calipers.
Hey y'all, I think I might have figured out the problem.
When the previous owners installed new pads on the truck, they appeared to have removed the backing plates from the new pads in order to get them to work with the truck. I noticed this because the old pads with missing them. I was just wondering, would it be okay to install the pads without the plates? I thinking about going ahead with it, but I wanted to know if somebody else had done that same thing.
