About to do a rebuild on a 360 that was rebuilt once already and bored 30over. Was wondering if there is a kit anyone would suggest to just do a stock rebuild.
I would suggest just running down to Napa and having 'em order you a rebuild kit. You probably should check the crank journals for wear, as well as the cylinder bores for taper, before you order the kit. That way you'll know if you need to order anything oversize.
I bought my kit from him, totally stock. I had a 360 and spent a few extra dollars and got a kit with a 390 crank. This kit comes with everything you need except the rods. And just so you know, a 390 crank, 360 rods (not as strong) and the short, pistons willl work. I can't remember the size off hand (1.44"?) but they come with this kit. Check it out, I don't think you will find a better bargan at NAPA with a crank.
Actually, a totally stock 390 can have 9.5:1 comp. When you order a kit, order one for a 66-69 ford car 390, you will have higher compression, still will run fine on pump gas, and get a torquer low end cam for it, it will have more power, for the same money, better gas milage and so on. Northern auto parts sells some kits for a pretty decent price, and order one with a cam upgrade. I would personally option to get the crank ground and a little overbore, just matters what you feel comfurtable with.

I think the setup you're thinking of is the one with 390 crank, 360 rods, and 390 truck pistons (1.680" compression height). This setup leaves the pistons .060" below deck, and leaves you with a compression ratio around 8.75:1. It should work fine with a small cam.

WOW - $379 for a kit with everything, that's a pretty good price. I wonder how much shipping would be to Pittsburgh, PA though?

Yes, 1.68" pistons! I couldn' t remember the size, but a lot of people assume that a 390 crank cannot use 360 rods. If you don't want to spend the cash it can work.
As for shipping, yeah the 68 lb. crank is expensive. I think I shipped it to my FPO address for about $150.00 for all of it USPS. It's still not a bad deal, youwill need nothing else to do the build, it even came with oil seals for the heads, exhaust doughnuts, and a bunch of other stuff not listed.
PS don't order anything til you have the engine completly broken down!

not to bring up an old thread or anything but when it is said that this setup would work with the stock 360 rods and a small cam would you consider the stock cam a small cam or would I have to buy another one?
I would consider the stock cam small AND I would consider buying a new one. The stock cam is 30+ years old, and camshaft technology has come a long way since then. For 8.75:1 compression, I'd look to the Crane 343901.
