Turbo issue

A friend of mine just bought a 94 F350. The turbo does not sound (or feel like while driving) to be "spinning" up or functioning. We took off the intake hose and checked the fan. It appears to be free spinning with sharp edges on each blade. No play going up or down. What should we look at next? Any help would be appreciated.

The 8th Digit in the VIN is a "k" btw.

Thanks,
Rob

Hi. Welcome to the FTE.

We took off the intake hose and checked the fan. It appears to be free spinning with sharp edges on each blade. No play going up or down.
That pretty well eliminates the turbo as the problem source as long as their isn't a massive exhaust leak.

What other symptoms does it have? It could be as simple as a dirty air filter or fuel filter. Is power down? Any unusual amounts of smoke..what color? Starting/idle/driveablilty problems?

did you pull the intake off and look at the turbo while it is running????

and like Cookie said, is it slow, lacking power, smoking???

On a stock truck with a stock, complete intake and exhaust you will prolly never hear the turbo. you might be able to feel a lil seat of the pants difference when it real starts to spool, but not much with a stock exhaust system.

what is the 7th digit? before i put my downpipe on i heard my turbo at 2grand+ nothing too much any lower than that. w/ new downpipe it screams 1500+ like no tomorrow. i do believe the 7th digit is f for a powerstroke if thats what your wondering.

The 8th digit being a K means its a idi turbo. And I never have heard the turbo idi's whistle much. Like Cookie says ya need to give us more details. Also might want to try the pre-powerstroke forum.

MMMMMM. My parents IDI will realy put you back in the seat in pretty much any gear, but it is a 5 speed, and I swear I haven't touched it at all.

on a side note if it is an IDI you will prolly never hear it whistle. 7 psi aint much fun. the PSD wont realy whistle in the cab until 14 psi.

I realized after the thread got stated I posted under the wrong topic... sorry.

Here are some additional issues that we have encountered;

It is hard to start... after letting it sit for a period of time that is. The night before last it got down in the 30's, we plugged it in at the house, yesterday morning it started fine. Yesterday afternoon after letting it sit for the day, we had to use some ether to get it started. I would assume we need to check the glow plugs to deal with that issue?

Once started it idles fine. We have noticed that while in motion (at a slow speed say 20-30 mph, if you let off the accelerator quickly it will sometimes stall out, but restarts immediately when you turn the key.

The main reason behind the our questions about the turbo is the bogging down while going up inclines. Anyone familiar with Tennessee, when heading down to Monteagle on I-24.... the most we could hold it at was 40 - 45 and that was a struggle. The whole time we could not feel a "boost" or anything from the turbo. We were pulling one lightweight vehicle (2500 - 3000k max) on a 35' 2 car hauler.

We may be over expecting of this truck and the way it pulled might just be the way it is... being that it's a 1 ton dually, we expected different results. With us not hearing or feeling anything out of the turbo, here I find myself asking the questions. Thanks for the response thus far, I appreciate in advance other comments and help you all can provide.

Rob

I pulled a Ford LTD on a one car trailer with my parents IDI and a 5 speed and the only way to maintain speed up a fair amount of the hills in eastern MN was to down shift to 4th. I too thought that it would have more power. but once I got the PSD, the IDI is really a turd now.

I would think if it was turbo related you would be leaving a big cloud of black smoke pulling. Sounds to me like lack of fuel.

I think so too.

My brother in law has a 93 n/a 7.3. While it won't hold a candle to the PSD, it certainly is not a dog.

It doesn't smoke.... being that we have that "stalling out" symptom, lack of fuel would make some sense. Another thing worth mentioning is this truck is a automatic which makes a difference.... I just didn't think it would be that much. What things should we spend our time checking fuel system wise?

Fastest and easiest thing is to put a new filter in it, see if that helps.
