Even the quickie lube place I took my truck to for a while when it was new pre filled the filter. I stopped taking it there when they forgot to put the washer back on the drain plug and .....drip.....drip.....drip......!
ya you definitely have to put some oil on the gasket so it creates a good seal. I have to say i have done oil changes on many vehicles and 02 F250 has to be one of the easiest i have ever done!
i always have added oil to the filter and the ring before spinning it on, first of all, if you dont put oil on the ring, it doesnt make a good seal, and second, if you dont fill it with oil, thats a couple seconds that the engine doesnt have oil...and thats never good, and plus when you start it you have all that oil pressure hitting the filter. so what i usually do after i fill the filter, put it on and fill the engine with oil, i usually turn it over, and JUST as it fires, i turn it off, that allows for the pump to fill the filter and whatnot, then i just start it up and make sure that i have oil press. i have always done this and never had a problem
I always fill my new filter up.
Correct me if i am wrong but i believe when you prefill the filter that oil is not filtered. The oil filter is pressurized thru the little hole and then flows out the big hole in the center (that you fill it in) to the motor. Or am i crazy?
I know on my old gassers if i didnt prefill my filter sometimes i would get some lifter tap till the oil got there,, Never got it when i prefilled. Always have prefilled My powerstrokes, be it good or bad..
I forgot to fill my filter once and got air in the high oil pressure pump. The truck would crank for quit a while before it would start leaving me with a sick feeling. A PSD mechanic remedy my problem over the phone by telling me where I could add oil to the high oil pressure pump. He also told me if I wanted to do my own maintenance I should always fill the filter with oil.
i have always just oiled the gasket then screwed it on onto the vehicle. but i guess with the size of this oil filter i will fill it. it cant hurt what the hell!!!
I've never filled the oil filter on any car or truck I have ever owned. My current Audi has 196,000 miles on it, runs smooth and quiet. Zero knocking anywhere. The PSD only has 56,000 on it. Same great sound.
Honestly I am more afraid of something getting into the outlet side of the filter,(the threaded hole) and then getting pumped to the engine than a few seconds of dry running at idle.
I have done it both ways, can't say I notice any appreciable difference in the amount of time it takes for the pressure to come up on the gauge. Like kwikordead, I worry about getting something other than oil in the clean side of the filter, that stuff goes straight into your mains.
what are yall filling the filter with??? old oil that's ben sittin in a 5 gallon bucket that's been outside for a few weeks??? nooo!! of course not, you'r putting new oil in the filter, new oil is clean, i promise. i always wipe the filter housing to get most of the black stuff off it and oil the o ring, don't fill it ALL the way, cuz it will run down your arm just like it did when you took the filter off.. lol. i try to do it on a cold motor, others will disagree saying that a warm motor is better when changing the oil for several reasons, they are right, it is better, but i found that if you wait till the motor cools, you don't have hot oil to run down your arm or splash in your face. i always pull the filter FIRST before draining so you can just drop it in the bucket and oil don't splash everywhere! and a cold motor won't have as much oil run out of the filter, i guess it drains off or something.
