Okay, so, i just replaced the power steering pump in my 1983 f-250 (not that it matters becuase the steering equip is all the same in these trucks), and now, with the new increased pressure, i blew the bottom seal of my steering box. SO, i just took it apart while still in the truck. (pulled the pitman arm, and then pulled the shaft out of the top of the box), and bought a seal kit. I am not taking it out becuase i dont want to fight that much (i need it running for monday), So, i am only doing the seals involved with the shaft. Now to where i need help: The stupid bearing thing wont come out. I figured, hey, i have a new one, so i might as well replace it while i am in here, but now the old one is officially jammed. Was i supposed to use a special tool or something? I just tried pushing it (more like hammering it), with a piece of wood. Its damaged, so i cant just push it back to where it goes, i HAVE to get it out. THank you very much for any help, sorry this is so long but iddnt want to leave out a single detail that might help me get help! Thanks again! mike
I rebuilt my steering box a few weeks ago, maybe I can help. But first could you explain/describe what you mean by the bearing thing? Im not that great at visualizing things
Thanks
Hey... the bushing i meant. The bushing that goes in the bottom half, from bottom up it, around the shaft (that the pitman arm connnects to), it goes retaining clip, seal, washer, upper seal, then the bushing. For whatever reason, the old one is just jammed. Thank you very much, -mike
Okay, here i am again. I got the bushing out (ended up using the pulley puller from my power steering pump and a nice made up contraption including a whole lot of washers). NOw i cant get the stupid seals in. Is it possible that someone put a sleave into this? Do they make cheapo repair sleaves for steering boxes like for cranks? Let me know, any help or comments appreciated, mike
Hey, Glad to hear you got it off. I had to fight with mine for a while too. Ended up drilling two holes (Not easy-its hard stuff) and screwing in some drywall screws to pull it out... I have heard that if you leave it in the truck (I didn't) you can just remove the retention clip and start the truck, turn the wheel a bit and the pressure shoots it out.
As far as I know they don't make any repair sleeves, could be wrong thou.
Sorry this doesn't help you now, but good info for the future.
