I learned of Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg back in about 1982. My dad had a small company called National Canvas Banner, and made banner to stretch across the street to promote events, such as you often see in small towns. We got an order for a banner from the Chamber of Commerce in Webster, I think, and had a great time laying the sucker out! We almost had to make an oversized banner to fit it all in! -TD
Wow, I had no idea this thread would keep going like it is. I have a great aunt who still lives in the old country, she lives in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch which means "St. Mary's Church in the hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio near the red cave."
I have been in Flin Flon Manitoba, Hell Michigan, Chicken Alaska, North Pole Alaska, Itta Bena Mississippi, Marsville Ontario, Wawa Ontario and Plaster Rock New Brunswick. I have driven across the Kicking Horse Pass.
I have never been to Vulcan Alberta, Jupiter Florida nor Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump (which I think is in Alberta), but I would like to visit some day.
I have been many other places with odd names that do not come to mind right now.
I heard that before Chicken Alaska was given its present name, the residents wanted to name their fair town after the State bird of Alaska. Since nobody knew how to spell Ptarmigan, they settled on Chicken.
Cheers,
Eric

Reason: Added Itta Bena
I once read somewhere that Los Angeles, California is actually an abbreviation for the city's actual name....but I dont remember what it is, just that it's several words long.
