I have a 79 F250 with the 400 & a problem -- a broken fitting that looks like part of the cooling system. The fitting is a 90-degree cast housing, approximately 1" O/D, with a male slip-fit on one end (going to a hose) and a flush-mount end on the other, held in place by 2 7/16" bolts. The hose runs from underneath over the alternator, through some sort of filter, and back into the block between the carb & the drivers-side valve cover. The fitting was located underneath the alternator on the passenger side. It almost looks like this fitting was attached to some sort of secondary water pump or air conditioning condenser. What does not make sense is why it goes back into the block on top of the engine.
I have checked NAPA, National Parts Depot, AutoZone, and my friendly neighborhood Ford dealer. No one know what this thing is, or where I can get a replacement. Anybody seen one of these things before? What is it, and do I need to find a replacement in a scrapyard?
It's probably a heated vaccum switch. It uses the coolant on one side of the 90 cast fitting, when it gets hot or cold it opens or closes letting the vaccum thru, or stopping it. Possibly related to emissions or something like that.
