I was told I should gut the cat on my I was told it will run SO much better but it runs exxelent now. Everyone I talk to that has don't is says I will see a nice power/ milage increase.
Is that true?
i was thinking about the same thing. however, do you mean gutting them like emptying them out as if there is something in there(im not 100% sure what IS in there) or taking them off completely?
the cats have ceramic honeycomb type stuff inside them which basically is a catalyst in the heat reaction of the burning gasoline fumes.
helps to further the reaction of the gasoline to pure CO2 and H20.
they used to use platinum... but that got expensive.
anyway, now that i geeked out, basically, the stuff inside the cat wears out and breaks and starts rattling around in there and is rendered WORTHLESS.
so, if you're just wanting more airflow, sure, you could gut the thing, but wouldn't it be easier to just cut it out and remove it altogether and weld in a straight pipe to the muffler?????
gutting them will increase airflow, but for complete performance, you're going to want a striaght pipe installed
once you gut them, they become a big source of turbulence in the exhaust system
UNLESS . . . . you have a shop do a straight pipe INSIDE of a dummy cat! dang . . now THAT would be SWEET! . . . you could have your cake and blah blah blah . . am i a genius or has someone else thought of this before? lol
My cats are gutted from the previous owner, but i have some exhaust leaks, so when i go to fix them i'm cutting the cats in half and putting pipe through. it looks stock now, but i cant see the inside of a cat being smooth for air to flow.
gutting a cat will help with better air flow, but not nearly as well as a straight pipe, like asa67_stang said....thankfully, i live in montana, where there are no emissions laws, and no emissions testing...hehehe....my 84 1/2 ton w/ a 300 has a 2 1/4" straight pipe from the manifold to a 31" glasspack, and on out the back of that behind the rear tire...it came that way when i bought it...
If you gut a cat be carefull as some of them were made with aspestos inside of them. I gutted the one in my 86 Mazda B2000 and man was that dusty stuff. Wear a mask and be carefull where you put it in the trash. After it is gutted out, some cars get a slight popping sound when you let off of the gas pedal. It should help with power and mileage a little bit but not a lot.
