Just picked up a 01 SC XLT 250 V10 4x4 SB with 39,000 miles yesterday..Have been looking for a couple of months, not easy to find one in this great of shape around here..First things getting done are a spray in bed liner and then nerf bars so the wife can in easier..LOL..Looking at new tires, will going from 235 up to 285 cause much troubles with the speedo?..Has 3.73 gears but still shouldn't lose much power right?..Don't how I could, this motor is a beast..Big step up from my 74 F100 with a 360..
Have spent lots of time in this and the v10 forum reading over the threads..Helped a lot in picking out the truck..
Welcome aboard the SD freight train! Sounds like you found a heckuva truck; congrats!!! Your V-10 should have NO problems with the 285 tire upgrade, even with the 3.73's in the rear. My '02 with the 5.4L motor has the 3.73 rear gears and I recently went from the stock 235's to the 285's. I lost 1mpg, but it is entirely worth it to me. The ride is tons better and I feel better having more meat on the road.
A competent dealer can re-code the PCM for the new tire diameter and get your speedo accurate on almost all normel tire increases. They usually charge for this and I have seen posts that suggest this is a very wide range of prices..low of $25 high of $75. NEGOTIATE
There is a practical limit on how high they can go and it helps if you know the tire manufactures REVOLUTION per mile figure ofr the new tires. The mathimatical calculation can induce a error as it does not account for loaded revolutions. There is a method to determin this real figure on the truck with chalk marks, tape measure and division into feet or meters per mile to get accurate REVs per mile.
Going to 285's shouldn't throw your gauges off to bad. I believe on some peoples truck it has corrected there gauges. I went from 265 to 285 with no problems. Save yourself the $75.
