I have a 2000 SD with 73K and had been running fine until a week ago when I went out to start my rig, she would surge, spit, sputter and die. I could smell a much stronger than usual smell of fuel and was puffing some black from the pipe. I had to restart several times and after I could get some pedal response, she set the SES light once the turbo spooled up, only had the light once. I have done some reading here and thought possibly the CPS may be at fault after reading some of the other posts, and figured I wouldn't be out much if it wasn't since all advise carrying a spare. Popped in a new one with no improvement, my fuel filter only had approx 6K on it, but changed it anyhow-appeared fine. Has a fresh tank of fuel-since the start of this, and I run DK (white bottle) on most every tank. Now once I get to normal temps, all seems to be fine, have to two foot it until then. The plug for the EBPV is unplugged, but I still hear what sounds like a valve actuating in the exhaust. So I turn to all you wise folks here for some help that I have yet to find.
I would begin by checking all the connections to the various sensors on the engine and make sure there is no corrosion anywhere. All the tiny little conductors inside the plugs need to be bright and shiny in apperance. If they are dulled looking then there is corrosion, creating a lot of impedence, and wrecking havoc with the engine management system.
Get it scanned also. If there are codes that will be a big help in determining the best course of action to take.
Thanks Kwik! a lot of my "knowledge," I say that loosely, of the SD's comes from reading many of your posts, did the Hutch after reading one. Anyway, I have a lot of auto background, but the PSD's are new for me, so perhaps I maybe overlooking the obvious. I'll stop by the "Zone" and get it scanned, and let you know.
If you want to learn about the design strategy and how the engines are made to run, then it's not too hard to diagnose problems. A solid knowledge of how the engines work is very helpful in guiding you toward the right repair.
This might sound like a long shot, but try replacing the aircleaner. Mine would start, huf and puf, then start to idle rough until it came up to operating temp. KnN air cleaner looked fine the month before, but some how got plugged with all kinds of crap. Just a thought.
hey all, truck is doing fine now! I had a 6637 filter on order prior to this problem starting, and in looking at the filter, didn't appear to be that bad, certainly not new, but again, not that bad. So Red, after hearing about yours, figured I'd do the " Kwik mod" a little earlier then I had planned-been pretty cold, disco'd the battery cables to clear the codes, and what do you know, no more problems. I'm almost embarassed to admit that was what appears to be my only problem, seemed as if it was more resricted due to oil, rather than dirty. So that said and done, I'll be preparing for the CCV next! Thanks again guys for taking the time!!
