Auto tranny help.

I just changed the filter in my C6. It's in an 88 F-150 w/351W and 4x4.

Now it doesn't seem to want to get into gear. I tried to take it for a quick spin and it slipped like crazy.

I'm figuring it has to be a fluid issue since I didn't touch anything mechanical...that I recall.

Does anyone know how much Mercon is required and the proper way to check for fluid level.

Also, what happens if it's overfilled?? Do I have to pull the pan back off?

Thanks,
Pete

Sounds like your not full or overfull

how much did you add when you change the filter. 4-5 qts will get you in the ball park (or at least on the dipstick).

Make sure your on LEVEL ground when you add fluid from change. 1.) Add 4qts, let sit 5 minutes and check dipstick. Start engine and check again, making sure you have fluid on stick

2.) With engine running, add 1 PINT at a time afterward until you get a reading at the LOWER end of the OK range (or cold full or between 1/2way between lower and upper range of normal depending on what stick markings you have).

3.) Start up and run for a couple of minutes and look for leaks. Once your satisfied there are no leaks, stand on brakes and shift thru gears p-r-n-d-2-1-2-d-n-r-p stopping for about a count of ten between shifts. DO NOT MOVE VEHICLE at this time.

4.) Check level AGAIN, with engine running. Make sure level is between ADD and FULL (or cold full or between 1/2way between lower and upper range of normal depending on what stick markings you have). If level is OK then drive vehicle for about 10 miles (warm up tranny) and check level. Top off to mark.

If your overfull then you have one of two options....drain out pan and refill or siphon with a handpump thru dipstick tube.

Another good thing to do is to put a drain plug in your pan. B&M makes one. Been putting them on all my slush boxes for 25+ years and only the first changes are messy. Makes it a lot easier to change too.

Did you put a new gasket between the filter and valve body? Was there any trash in the pan?

If you just changed the fluid in the pan, it will take somewhere around 4 quarts. If you drained the converter, which you should, it will take about 12 quarts.

Fluid should be checked hot, with trans in park, on level ground. Only way to remove excess fluid is pull the pan, or suck out thru the fill tube, unless you have drain olug like Larry..

Thanks for the help guys.

BTW, how do you drain the converter? All I did was drain the pan and change the filter.

On the front bottom of the bell housing, you'll see a flat inspection plate held on with 2 bolts. Remove the plate, you'll see the torque converter. Bump the starter until you see a drain plug. They are usually brass and have a 7/16" hex head.

Remove the plug and drain the fluid, it'll take a while. It's easier and best to do when the fluid is hot or warm. Button everything up and refill the transmission.
