Maybe this should go in the transmission section but I keep hearing how important it is to add a cooler when it's time to change the ATF and filter. I don't pull anything but I would really like to know if it's necessary. Thanks in advance to all who reply.
All tranny's have coolers. Most are part of the radiator. Some have their own external coolers. With that said, you fluid can never be too cool. So sure, add an external one.
I added a B&M last year. It has a built in valve/orifice that circulates fluid through the cooler only when the fluid gets to a certain temperature or viscosity.
I don't tow anything, but at under $50, it was an easy choice to help protect the tranny in the stop n go traffic here in the Atlanta summers.
Actually, you CAN cause problems by over-cooling the tranny fluid, although some trannies have an internal t-stat to stop flow to the cooler until the fluid's hot enough.
If you're not going to be towing, I doubt you need an aux cooler there in Canada. Here in the desert, however............
