I posted this on the Aerostar board because it's really a problem with my Aerostar, but my '95 F-150 seems to have the same feature. So I thought I might get some help here as well: I can't get my trans. out of park by moving the lever while depressing the brake pedal anymore. Now, the only way to get out of park is to have the key in the "off" (not "lock") position, then move the lever. Can anybody tell me how this system works and/or how to fix it? It's a '93 Aerostar.
My 97 Cougar has this feature and it annoyed me.
All I did was dig around under the dash untill I found the wire that went from the brake area to the shifter (floor shift). I just unplugged it and all is well. The solenoid is normally disengaged with the power off and then when you start the car, it energizes and locks the shifter. If you unhook it, it will never get power and therefore can't lock up the shifter.
