Yes the newer 4wd models are automatic. My '03 does not even have the option of ONLY 2wd. If the rear wheels slip realitive to the front it engages.

Hi hllon4whls,
I moved up from my 97 Explorer XLT AWD 5.0L V8 (98,900 mi) to a 2005 EB 4.0 V6 4x4.
My 97 was still very smooth with a nice comfortable ride & great in all the snow (MA).
The 97 was my 3rd SUV since '86, and my first Ford. Let's just say I was very satisfied with it, and it was the best of my 3 SUV's. It pulled my '90 bass boat just fine, & great on ski trips, camping trips (no major issues, AC, AWD, & electrical were fine). I used Mobil 1 Synth, about every 5000 (did that myself), and had the tranny & transfer case fluids changed periodically. I don't work on my vehicles myself like I did in the 70's & 80's. The mechanicals just seemed easier to work on then; less electronics.
Now with 8200mi on the 2005 EB, I'd say this is the best I've had. True, not long enough to really know, but first impressions have been great! It's a smooth shifter & great in the snow (I know, you don't see snow down south). I haven't towed with it yet; my boat is trapped by snow right now, & ice still covers most ponds around here .
