Question Gauge questions??

A few questions about gauges.
1. Are most of you running electrical or mechanical? (i believe pyro is all electrical)?
2. Do I need a special "sending block" for trans temp that may not come with the gauge?
3. Do I even need trans temp or is factory gauge ok?
4. I think i'll try the install myself, there was a pretty good writeup i saw, but I cant seem to find it again?

I think I will also buy the parts online (local dealers are crazy). I guess I'll see what sponsors have first.
Any of you guys in Colorado Springs area want to help with install? Free beer and all you can eat T-bones?
Thanks for your help guys.

Here are some answers that may help:

1. Yep, pyros are electrical, as are tranny temp gauges. I'm assuming you may be able to find an electric boost gauge somewhere, but all that I've seen are mechanical. Oil press, most are electric, some people swear by mechanical, but remember that you'll have a pressurized oil line running into the cab (Yeti, I believe, had his blow off the back of his gauge and make a huge mess into the cab). Mostly it comes down to preference.

2. You do need a sending unit, I don't know if that's what you're referring to, but it should come with the gauge.

3. 99% of FTE thinks the factory trans temp gauges suck. Make your own decision. It can't hurt to have a gauge with actual #'s on it anyway...

4. Somebody who's done gauges recently should know where that is, I've seen a few of them, but don't have any saved into my favorites. Most gauges come with pretty good instructions as well...

As much as I like free beer, the 22 hour drive over there is PROBABLY not worth it, but thanks for the offer...

from what i have learned; all of the gauges (except fuel level and the spedo) are glorified idiot gauges, one step away from being a idiot light.

The trans temp fits in this idiot gauge catagory also. If the gauge moves at all past the norm something is wrong. As far as where to install the temp sender, there is a pressure test port on the driver's side of the trans.

I personally think that all electrical gauges are safer and more rugid than mechanical gauges. I am going to buy some ISSPRO gauges, they are all electrial and include 270 deg. sweep. i am thinking of buying them from www.dieselmanor.com
