Speedometer exchange

Hi, everyone.
Thanks in advance for bearing with me.
Was wondering if a speedometer show the correct speed if all connectors are the same if you switch it from one vehicle to another.
I wanted to change my speedo from stock 85 MPH to anything that would let me get a better idea of what I was really doing on the highway (had needle around to zero, still had more pedal). Went to the boneyard, found 100 MPH speedo on 76 F series pickup that was same shape, etc as mine. Thing didn't work, returned to junker's, couldn't find higher rated mechanical speedo on any truck, van, Lincoln, Mercury. Found 120 MPH on a little Probe with almost the same connector at speedo cable end. After a little modification (speedo cost $10.00, if I had to buy the Probe cable, maybe another $20.00? Beats $80.00 plus for something that may still have to be modified.) it fit about perfect, including lighting.
Thanks for any input. Munrow

On the older style the speedo will read correctly, it's speed reading is gear driven. Change the gear and the speed on the speedo changes.
