I have a 2003 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4, auto, with the 4.0L engine. Bought it used (w/ 27k on it), and shortly after the purchase, had to replace the extruder seals (front axle). The truck had about 32K on it at the time, and Ford fixed it under warranty. At 59K, the same problem occured and again had to replace the extruder seals. So I have a couple of questions; 1) anyone aware of this being a problem with the later model Ranger 4x4s (had a '93 with the same configuration and never had a problem in this area, or anywhere else either, and 2) if this is a problem, does anyone know of higher quality replacement seals that might last.

I believe these are excluder seals, but I could be wrong. They're basicly dust seals, and it is common for them to make noise. The problem first came in the explorers since they have the live-axle front end too. Appearantly you can spray the seals with silicone spray or something to quiet them down, haven't tried it myself yet. Welcome to the site!
You are correct, they are excluder seals, not extruder. I use to use spray silicone way back when on rubber parts to keep them from drying out. Would make sense that the same solution could work here. Would probably be best to spray them right after they were installed, then occasionally after that for maintenance. Thanks for your suggestion.
