I have a 2002 Ranger supercab 4x4 with about 16000 miles on it. Every once in a while when I start it I hear this knock from under the truck. It seems like it is coming from around the passenger side foot area but its hard to tell. It doesn't happen very often so The dealership is no help because it wont do it all the time, and they have to hear it. It has a 4.0L engine and a 5 speed auto tranny. The only way to describe the sound is like if you hit the floor under the truck with your knuckle. This is happening while still in park just after starting the truck. Thanx for any insight.
Same noise on my 03 2.3. It's the A/C clutch engaging. The A/C cycles periodically even in winter if heater control is set at anything other than floor heat or off. The noise sounds like someone gave the right underside of truck a good kick.
Same sound on my 04 w/5 speed auto! Haven't taken it to the dealer because I can't get it to make the noise on a regular basis. It does sound like something engageing or disengaging. Now has almost 11,000 mi. and has made the noise from the first week.
well, i am glad im not the only one. i thought i was going crazy. it never popped for my dad. mine doesnt have AC so rockledges idea makes sense. mine will pop when i first start the truck and it will pop when i am cruising at 60 mph on a smooth road and anywhere in between. we had a warm sunday here in Iowa and i never heard it pop so i think it is only happening when it is cold. btw, its a 91 2.3L 4x2 manual tranny with 240k+ miles.
