Oil pickup screen was half plugged on my 300 I6 at 70,000 miles. Don't know how often oil was changed because I bought it at 58,000 miles. But I had another 300 I6 that runs strong now at 177,000 miles and always had oil change every 3,000 miles and always had Rislone every change--never has pan off.

I've tried fram check valve type filters in 4 different Fords and everyone of them knocked at start-up. One of the trucks only has 67,000 miles on it. A friend of mine tried the fram checkvalve filter on his truck and it knocked on start up also. Fords do not like checkvalve type filters.
I used (in the late '60's) to use a bit of brake fluid in my engine to soften up the various seals and help with engine leaks then while I was working at Hewlett Packard one of the maintainance guys and I started talking about Rislone. He used to work as a diesel mechanic and said that it (Rislone) was almost the same as Ford type "F" auto trans fluid and that they always used the ATF instead of the Rislone (Rislone was about $4.00 a quart as I recall and ATF cost around $.35 at the time). I started using a quart in my engines at each oil change and was amazed at how it cleaned and quieted the engine. I had 165,000 on my F100 before it was stolen and it still ran like a dream. Those 360's had a habit of lifter clattering but the type F would quiet them down in a couple hundred miles. I still use it now though not religiously.
Look on the Rislone web site. They have material safety data sheets that give some of the ingredients. You could compare with the ATF material safety sheet. I have heard of putting ATF in the crankcase to clean it out and may have done so once in the '70s (Boy, why does that seem like ancient history? Am I getting old?). But I will stick with the Rislone. If Rislone is just like ATF, maybe it would work in the Mazda 5 speed.
The Rislone is always in there as I put a quart in every oil change. If I have to add before the next oil change I just put oil. I did it to my '77 for 135,000 miles till I sold it, my '84 for 175,000 miles till I sold it, and have done it to my '95 since I bought it 20,000 miles ago. Recently started doing it to my wife's 3.0 Aerostar and the 460 V8 motorhome I just bought.
my old man's truck does the same thing, on cold start-ups (especially on 40 and below mornings) its a 92 with a 4.9 six, when it is started the knock will go on for 5 secs, then decrease to a very distinct tick, i have a feeling that a lifter is gradually bleeding down after shut off.
