Blower Motor Speed Question

I have a 91 F150 4WD equipped with the 300 inline 6, five speed, and no air conditioning. The blower motor will only operate in the fourth and highest postion on the switch. I replaced the blower motor and when that didn't fix the problem I replaced the switch itself. The problem remains the same. In talking to friends some tell me there is a part that they refer to by a bunch of names but most commonly the blower motor relay. I have searched high and low and not found any listing for that part. So I guess my questions are:

1) Is the diagnosis correct?
2) If so, what is the part called and where is it located in the truck?
3) Does the aftermarket reproduce the part or is it a dealer item only?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Matt

I just had this replaced on my truck for the same problem. Apparently this part wears out fairly frequently, and results in only the highest speed working on the heater motor. It's called a heater motor resistor, costs about 30.00 and is easy to replace.
Frank.

Thanks. I guess what annoys me is that I work at a Carquest store on the counter and despite countless hours digging through catalogues I can't find the part aftermarket. (I get my parts for 10% over cost so obviously it saves me a lot of money.) But I did a little searching on this board and found a NAPA part number BR223. I'm going to have to run that tomorrow.

I don't know for sure but I think it is behind the controls.

In my '93 it was in the heater box just inside where the fan is mounted.

yeah most of them I've seen was in the heater box=fan relay switch-I believe they call it!!!should have 1 plug in multiple wires-and on the inside it has a wire wound around like a spring-it is suppose to take the heat rather than the switch

I have replaced mine.
On my '87 it is on the duct going from the blower motor to the firewall and has a plug w/ green, yellow, orange & red wires. It has a red backing plate attached to the duct w/ two screws. Once you take it out you will see the windings that are held in the airflow, they look like lightbulb filaments.
