I have been meaning to ask this question all winter. When I am in four wheel drive I hear this winding sound when coasting or foot off the gas. It kind of sounds like the sound knobby tires make on the pavement. It stops whenever I accelerate and only happens when transfer case is engaged, not when just the hubs are locked. 2004, V10, manual hubs. I had a 2004 diesel and never noticed this but maybe it was just being drowned out. Any input appreciated. Thanks.
Hey man, I noticed the same noise today while I was engaged in 4x4. I have a 03' F350, but mine wasnt a sound noticable as much as I could feel a very light feeling on my feet when I was coasting.
If you have the floor shift lever for the 4X4 , when you hear the noise, put your hand on the floor lever, move lever slightly side to side (free play) the noise should go away. If thats the case it is normal. It is just the noise from the transfer case traveling through the lever. My 04 F250, and 05 F350 both with the 5.4 does it.
I've got the same noise. I think its all the gear working going on underneath the driver. Its only if it is under a load accelerating or decelerating, not coasting or level.
I have the same type of noise, and have had it in my '74 whenever I put a new set of gears in it and they didn't get some mileage on them in 4x4 ... the front wheels are usually dragging the back ones in 4x4, so the rear pinion gear is riding on the BACK of the ring gear (as in, the gear is meshing as it would in reverse).
The backside of the ring gear (and pinion) are usually not broken in (if at all) and they can make noise like that at high speeds.
In general, it's nothing to worry about especially when you have low miles. If you don't live in reverse a lot, or 4x4, get used to the noise My truck at only 18K miles is still doing it, but not as loudly as it did when brand new... be patient.
