testing voltage regulator

is there a way to test the voltage regulator my truck is not charging and i think it is the regulator the alternator is brand new but i mounted it in the uper postion on my engine in front of the head and it seems to get very hot very quick should i mount it lower to keep it cool or is it ok there the voltage regulator is the original.

Use a jumper wire between 1st and 3rd wire on regulator plug,I can't remember exactly but I think the first is labeled "F",the 3rd is "A".

or, you could just get another one for $10...that's what i ended up doing. i figured it couldn't hurt, since the thing had been on there since i bought it. i was having charging issues as well, and my alt light kept coming on...changed the regulator and never looked back.
