air cond

has anybody installed air cond in their truck - madse something work not a off the shelf product looking round for a car to score a system from
my boss built a air cond out of a suzuki van system and just wondering what else people have done - i don't want to just buy an off the shelf unit - more interested in building something or making something work - i work on hot rods and moidified vehicles and am sick of the so and so front end, leafsprings from such and such, somebody else built this bit and another that - hell sounds like a kit car thats not wqhat i want for my truck

Hey bootie, You say you want something different for your a/c, but then you ask what did everyone else use? If you want to be original, why ask?

I understand what you are getting at, bootie. I worked for Valeo climate control for a while as a contract pattern maker (used to be Volkswagon of America)...anyhow, I got the idea ... and it may very well be the wrong idea... that a/c is just 3 components. Compressor, evaporator, and fan.

I'd think you could find a small car unit and adapt it to your truck without too much trouble depending on your engine's pulley setup etc. Give us an idea of what you're running and what's available there in NZ.

NOT an a/c expert, himmelberg

new zealand does'nt get hot, all u need is another sheep skin, that way u won't get lonely or cold, as for a demister, just give a few mates a lift, with all the hot air spoken about cricket/rugby, the screen will always be warm and clear.

What Himmelberg has the truth in it BUT in order for a system to work properly ALL components must be sized properly. Your trucks insulation or lack of and if the windows are tinted or not and to what degree all part of the equation. Get a book on A/C systems read it, learn it and then design. I've read enough to be dangerous but it is possible.

there's always one isn't there but what do u expect from an island of crims, thought it was you guys who knew about the gumboots and the velcro gloves,

anyways the p[roblem is not with the heat but with the humidity - different heat to that dry heat you ozzies get where everything just dies - whats your truck look like with roo bars, and your the cricket nuts have to cheat by bowling underarm

was thinking maybe pulling the system out of an eg4 honda civic they have a nice small pump and air/cond radiator - not sure what the under dash system is like - figure the components should be small - probably need to make a new case for the whole lot to fit it up under the dash -

No one likes one-off fabricated "stuff" more than I do, but IMO building A/C from scratch is using energy that could be put into something really cool. The aftermarket systems are so reliable and work so well that I can't imagine spending the time on a mix and match system. On the other hand "making something out of nothing" is what created this whole hobby thing that we enjoy so much. Sometimes the engineering of the part is at least as important as the part itself. So if another sheepskin and a freezie pack don't do it for you GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK FF56
