Well, as I wait for the UPS guy to show up with my brake kit, I decided to install my Lokar 23" shifter. It took me a little over 2 hours, but it is installed really nice. I decided to hook up my power steering pump, but am having problems fabricating a bracket for it. (remember its my first build).
What are you guys using? Is there a piece I can buy? Where should I start?
Fenders,
is there a reason why you are running a different PS pump than the one that came with your clip? I figured Id use the one that came with mine for no other reason than its what came with the front clip.
From what I can make out, I think I should cut a piece of steel to fit, and just bend it until it fits right. Is that what we do? Seems easy enough.
I wanted to use the serpentine belt setup on my Ford engine. It looks very clean. Your method is best as far as providing the correct line pressure to your Volare box. Ford pumps are a little too strong. Most GM pumps are way too strong. Start fabbing. Bracket has to be very stout of course, or it will move whenever you stress the pump.
I'm actually at work right now whereas my files are at home, but I beleive brother CDN - PJS55, posted a note on this subject the last time we discussed it - that there was an adjustable valve out there that was intended for dialing up/down your PS line pressure so as to compensate for using pumps and boxes from different mfgrs. RB's carry the item.
Im now thinking about a serpentine setup, and want to use a pump that will accept the pulleys I buy. What year pump will work with my 79 302?
Will any ps pump for a 302 fit? What are you guys suing, and what works best?
After a frustrating round of trying to mix and match pulley-damper-waterpump components from different years, I grabbed the entire front off a 79 LTD at the salvage yard. And I do mean everything. Waterpump, crank vibration damper. Get it all, even if you are running new. It's a lot easier to be sure you're getting the correct new part when you're standing at the counter with the old one in your hand.
They are no doubt other good donor models, but for some reason the 79 is a very clean serpentine setup, and the useless AIR pump can be removed without grief. I bought, but didn't install the AC compressor, (at the time I did not realize the 302 would put out such awesome power and I didn't want to choke it) but the AC rides on a separate pulley and could be added later if I choose.
Early 80's and up mustangs with a 302 have a good setup. They use a spring loaded tensioner. I know T-birds of the early 80's have a serpentine setup but you must manually set the tension. If you use a mustang setup you will not be able to use a manual fan because the pulley mounting holes are wider that other ford engines.
