My truck has been acting up for the past week. It seems to be out of gas and then dies. However, when i leave it sit overnight, it will start and run good for a little, then die again. It is getting fuel past the filter, and it gets spark. I dont know what the problem is, but now it wont even attempt to fire. It is an '89 f150 4x4 with dual tanks. its got the 300 six. another problem i have with it is the front tank is full, but the switch doesnt do anything when i switch it. it stays on the rear tank all the time. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
Sounds like you're plauged with several issues. Fuel may be getting past the filter but maybe not enough. Take a reading of the fuel pressure at the fuel rail schraeder valve if possible. You can rent/borrow a gauge from the parts store. Check your fuel regualtor for gas present in the vacuum line, a sign of regulator issues. Check the fuel pump, I'm not sure if you have one on the frame rail and one in each tank. Check the connections on the frame rail and all grounds for the fuel tank selector switch.
I have an 1987 F150 with the same parts as your truck. I had some of the same problems fuel problems to. The rear tank may have a bad pump causing the fuel pressure to drop while running. Mine runs for 5 minutes then stalls on the front tank, and it won't start until i start it with the good rear tank, then switch to the bad tank. It was tested at Fords for low fuel pressure. It would good to get the front pump working that way you can tell if it runs. You also could have a bad fuel selector value which is stopping the fuel front going to the engine. One way to check is to switch the rear fuel lines with the front ones at the fuel selector value. This didn't work on my problem it may work for you. It's under the drivers seat on the frame, it has five fuel lines. Turn key to just on and listen under the truck for the front in tank pump, should sound like the rear pump. You could have a bad fuel pump on the frame rail like I had mine started to run real loud. Check the fuel pressure at the engine for each tank to see if it drops. I replaced the frame rail pump ( because I kept trying to start it with a bad selector valve), and the front tank pump and the fuel selector value, because all the fuel was being pumped to the front tank in about 30 minutes. Hope this helps some, mike
had a similar problem before with a relatives car, went through every thing i could think of and it turned out to be leaves in the gas tank. they would get sucked against the sump screen, car would die and start right up after it sat. good luck
I have a sort of similar problem on my 88 F-250, when I`m driving doen the freeway after a while my truck will sort of stall and when you hit the gas it sorta revs but I dont gain anything from i(i.e. speed), it just slows down. And then I pull over to the side of the road and it dies. After it dies, all I have to do is turn the key and it starts right back up again and runs fine for a while, the amount of time itll run for varies. I have the dual tanks with a frame mounted and 2 in tank pumps. Me and my friends believe it is a timing related problem, but I wanted some outside opinions.
