I'm wondering why the automatics' shift points are so low. Mine usually shifts between 17k - 25k rpms. That's normal driving. I'll sometimes shift it to 2nd gear and I can go 55mph w/o any trouble. I think it hovers around 42k rpms. Something like that.
42,000 rpms?? Holy crap! Mine only does 5400 RPM redline. You should be running low 7's with that kinda powerband
Any how, do you drive with OD on? In my M5OD, I can do 57 in 2nd, then shift to hit third, without losing my powerband, so I would imagine that 55 in an AUTO is ok. Yes, a tuner can change your shift points, but please please becareful of changes like that. Ive heard of some problems arising, but we all know every tuner is perfect, and can do anything you want.....
I noticed that real quick after getting the '05 w/ auto as compared to the '00 w/ 5 speed.
I'm quite sure the shift points are set to improve mpg numbers. The lower you keep the rpms, the better the mpg. Performance is sacrificed on the alter of fuel economy. I wish they had a switch so you could select "performance" or "economy".
Often around town, I'll just turn OD off.
I'm already figuring that after warranty, I'll either get a chip, or a tuner, so I can alter the shift points.
FWIW, the mpg numbers are about the same comparing the '05 to the '00.
