ok, now that i have a whole week of 460 experience under my belt i see what tkrocks and everyone else is talking about. mine gets hard to start when it gets good and warm. i have noticed that my battery is too small, my wires are too old, and my starter needs a heat shield. i will get these things taken care of and hope to see a change for the better. if not for your suggestions i would have assumed internal problems. thanks guys. The last post got my attention. I assumed internal problems because of hard starting after hot on my 73 F100 390. There were other reasons to pull the engine as well as it had oil leaks I could never get rid of and some smoking when you would really get on it. Funny thing is that when I tore it down the engine was in much much better condition that I assumed it would be. I believe that the hard starting when hot was due to other issues like what everyone is talking about in this post. I'm still glad I pulled it though as I'm taking the opportunity to install some better performing stuff...lol.
Make sure you are using the OEM Duraspark II ignition system and that it is wired properly. The DS-II system is designed to reduce starter drag and current requirements with retarded timing in start mode.
The original poster hasn't been back in days with additional information. He must have figured out the problem.
my lack of education shines brightly when i read such posts as torque1st's. retarding the timing during startup makes the engine easier to turn over. i knew this from playing with the distributor but never knew it was a built in feature. by the time i learn enough it will be too late for me.....lol
yeah it sure would be nice and respectful if everyone would come back and say hey guys i found the problem thanks for your help, this is what was happening....
